What to Wear Wednesdays! Sept 28, 2011

Welcome to a new feature on my blog! There's one question I hear over and over again... what to wear to a photo session? Here's your answer! I'll be posting an possible outfit or items of clothes every week, and explaining why exactly that outfit would photograph well. The point isn't that you'd go buy it exactly, but that you'd be equipped to figure out how to piece together your own fabulous wardrobe :)

Disclaimer: I am NOT a fashionista. Not even close. My style in high school was atrocious and embarrassing, and although I think I've come a long way, I do wish I was more fashionable, and I wish I knew how to pull together accessories. But, luckily for me, there's Pinterest and Polyvore, which is used by people far my stylish then me, and they kindly post they're ideas for me to link to :)

What makes this a great photo session outfit?

1. Layers! The scarf + cardigan + button up is great use of layers, and would be cozy for fall photos

2. Textures! The textures in the scarf, earrings, shoes, bracelet and bag work together really well.

3. Colour! I have a bit of a thing for teal and grey :)

13 months....

of blog silence. Coincidentally, my son is 13 months old ;)

Yup, I abandoned blogging in favour of mom-ing. But, I've decided to give it another shot, as it is useful to connect with my friends and clients, keeping everyone in the loop about what's going on at tonni.g.photographer.

So, I had a baby! On August 19, 2010, my dear little boy, Felix Martin, was born. Maybe I'll share about it sometime.

Since I haven't blogged in over a year, I'll be sharing sessions from the past year, and I'm planning on throwing more personal stuff in here too. I love a good project, and my house is in a perpetual state of decor change, so I may as well turn it into blog content! Not to mention, you'll be hearing about the many adventures and mis-adventures of a curious 13 month old boy :)

Hadley, and why 6 month sessions are great. {Aylmer Baby Photography}

My very last session before I'm on maternity leave for a couple months- it was a pleasure to meet up with this family again and capture little Hadley at six months old!

Why are 6 month sessions so great? Well I'll let her photos help explain...

Reasons why you should consider a 6 month portrait session for your baby:

#1 She's sitting and smiling and displaying her adorable personality in full force, which is so fun!

#2 She's not crawling or walking yet- therefore she doesn't move very fast (or at all!). That means no chasing and coercing to sit still!

#3 Mom and dad are comfortably settled into they're roles as parents, and they can read they're kid's signals- rather unlike the newborn session, where everything is new! Also, mom and dad are rested :)

#4 Baby smiles! (did I already say that one? oh well, it bears repeating!)

#5 And when she's had enough, baby glares. This photo made me laugh so hard! Clearly, she was through with me and my camera.

The lovely Bentum family! {Ancaster Family Photography}

This was a very special session... you see, mom is a photographer, and she doesn't often get photos of herself with her family- that's just the way it goes when you're the one with the camera! She came down to help me with a few weddings in June, and we arranged a session swap- I do a session for her, and later this week I'll get one in return! It's a pretty sweet deal :D

This little guy is quite the walker, for only 11 months old! I was impressed... he kept me on my toes!

He's bound to be a book lover, with a plethora of teachers in his family... I love it when a family brings along great props!

And one of mom and her little man to end off the night. What a happy little guy!

What a fun session!

When I first received an email from Shannon, I wasn't sure how this would work- how to come up with a full session's worth of photos of 2 grown women? But, I figured, they're sisters- it should work out just fine!

And did it ever!

They came well prepared with lots of fun props- and they pretty much laughed non-stop!

Shannon and Cait, thank you SO MUCH (or should I say, "YOU THANK!?!), I had so much fun with you guys! I'm so glad the rain held off and we were able to meet!

Becky & Shawn {London Engagement Photography}

I was so excited for this engagement session! Becky and Shawn agreed to wander around downtown and see what we could find, and we found some great spots!

Little baby Winter... she was an absolute doll! A few adorable little cries, and lots of contented looking around. I loved working with her- and her parents!

Daddy Jeff is such a good sport... even carrying on after getting his shirt sprayed with poop!

And mommy Jenny is such a great new mom... I don't know if I've ever heard anybody talk so cheerfully about getting up to feed every hour all night! Little Winter is so blessed!

A beautiful sunset night in a meadow full of snails...

results in a fabulous family portrait session! It's a good thing there's no sound effects with photos... otherwise you'd be subject to the crunch crunch crunch of snails be squished- we couldn't hardly take a step without crushing some!

But I think all the grossness of the snails was worth it, no?

Louisa {St. Thomas newborn photography}

Meet little Louisa...
Isn't that a fabulous name? I just gotta say, slightly old-fashioned names are my favourite... consider that a hint to my babe's name ;)

You wouldn't know from these photos that she was crying for alot of the session- this baby girl absolutely COULD NOT STAND being out of her swaddle. As soon as she was swaddled, she was asleep in seconds... and there was no sneaking her out of it.

But I hope this helps mom feel better that we did get some great shots- and she isn't crying in every one!

And being the daughter of a bi-cultural family, we had to give a nod to the German team at the World Cup- her and her older siblings were all wearing their jerseys!

These two know how to do a wedding! It was a long day, but there was plenty of laughs, a fantastic bridal party, and delicious Chinese food!

Jon is my cousin- our dads are brothers. Growing up, I recall plenty of teasing and chasing the boy cousins. When we were teens, we played trumpet together at Christmas. Weren't we cool?

I received a last minute call from my cousin last week- can I come and do a session of their new little guy? Of course! I always have room for a last minute newborn session... and I was looking forward to the challenge of working with 3 older siblings as well!

Apparently he fussed all day, and we were hoping Ethan would feel the need for a good sleep as we got started... and he obliged, for a while.

But then he was hungry. And then he was hungry again.
And then he needed his diaper changed... several times.
But that's what babies do best, right? He was (is!) still adorable!

I caught a shot of the peanut gallery, they made sure I was staying on track!

Thanks so much for calling me! Even though he was a little fussy-bum for part of it, we still got some great stuff. I hope he slept like a dream that night!

My biggest announcement ever...

What a year it’s been! (well, technically, 18 months… but who’s counting?)

18 months ago I started my very first facebook group, and nervously uploaded photos from my first maternity and newborn sessions. Referrals and emails started coming in almost immediately, and I wondered… could this be real? Could I really do this?

And by the grace of God, here I am. I’ve worked hard and met dozens and dozens of wonderful people. I’ve been stretched and challenged, and rode a pretty steep learning curve. It’s been good!

I’ve attended several workshops, and received much instruction and encouragement. I’ve improved tremendously, and I’m ready for what’s next.

With a baby on the way, I have decided that now is the time to take the leap- the leap away from being too busy to enjoy life, the leap away from working hard and struggling to meet business expenses. I suppose you could say I’ve decided to really ‘go pro’ in this photography thing! And that starts with a new website, a new way of preparing for sessions, offering prints and albums and canvasses, and a new pricing structure. My aim is to have fewer sessions, but give those clients an amazing custom portrait experience. I want to have time to build relationships with my clients, to understand how their families work together, and most of all, to love doing what I’m doing!

And with all that being said, I’d like to introduce you to the new tonni.g.photographer!

Randy and Ashley {Aylmer Wedding Photography}

It was her first day of college. The class on her schedule was titled "Marriage and Family"- and her friends warned her of the first assignment. Pair up with an opposite-gender classmate and plan a fake wedding- budget and all.
As Ashley got acquainted with the campus and began meeting new people, she met a third year student- Randy Penner. As it turns out, Randy also had this "Marriage and Family" class. Ashley, remembering the first assignment, blurted out, "Hey! Will you marry me?"
And he said yes.

A little over a year later, he returned the question. For real.

And it looks to me like that class may have been worth far more then a college credit!

Stubbornly Adorable Mr. Drew {St. Thomas newborn and baby photography}

This adorable little guy has quite a life story already! He spent his first week in the hospital, getting some special attention... but now he's happily taking up all of mommy & daddy's attention at home! Welcome home, Drew! So glad everything ended up well!

As you can see, he started off as a little angel baby- sleeping happily and holding poses (for the most part!). But then he needed a quick diaper change, and although we tried to do so photos with just his diaper on, this boy likes fully clothed, THANKYOUVERYMUCH!

Inconsolable for nearly an hour, even after his onsie was back in place... we tried a quick feed, which Drew pulled off with air of pomp and circumstance.

Aha! We win! He was finally comforted (after watching the Olympics! Clearly, an athlete in the making), and we were able to capture him in his gorgeous nursery.

Finally, some snuggle time with mom before I went home.

little Hadley - 5 days old {Aylmer Newborn Photography}

What an adorable and well behaved little girl!

I always go into a newborn session prepared to be there for a few hours- my record so far is 3.5 hours! With all the fussing and feeding and snuggling, it's not unusual to be there for 2+ hours.

But Miss Hadley was different. She was on her very best behaviour, and even though she was only 5 days old, I didn't hear a peep out of her! She only opened her eyes once, and she had one very quick feeding break... other then that, she was perfect! She wins for the fastest newborn session, at one hour and fifteen minutes! Yay Hadley!

Mom and Dad, I sincerely hope she was just as good for the rest of the day, and that she's letting you get some more sleep at night! Enjoy her while she's so little!

4 days new {London Newborn Photography}

I've said it a thousand times- I love love LOVE newborn sessions. Especially when it involves a little lady as perfect as Miss Brooklyn!

At four days old, we got her started on a life diva-licious-ness.

I just couldn't resist- a beautiful little human is made up of all those beautiful little parts!

Brooklyn's daddy has one of the coolest jobs in the world- he's a tattoo artist!
I just had to incorporate his artistry into our session.

I hope she continues to be a little angel baby for the rest of her life!

If you're having a baby anytime soon, and you're interested in a session, get ahold of me! Brooklyn's parents were fantastic, emailing me within 24 hours of her birth- that meant that we could schedule the session when she was just 4 days young, and she was so wonderfully sleepy and pose-able.

What's involved with a newborn session? {Aylmer Newborn Photography}

I've got at least 3 newborns scheduled in the next month, and hopefully lots more in the future, so I thought I'd do a post on newborn session basics. Newborns sessions are my absolute favourite sessions, even though they often take the longest. Who can resist an adorable sleepy little munchkin?

One of the most important things is timing. Doing your newborn photos as early as possible is key- 3-7 days old is ideal. Why so early? Well, your baby has spent 9 months curled up in the fetal position in your womb. He likes to be all curled up! In fact, I’d wager that your little guy doesn’t even realise yet that there is room to stretch! But, he’s a smart little nugget- after a week or two, he catches on to the spaciousness of this world, and he likes to stretch! But of course, the photographer shows up and wants him to curl up on his tummy… and sometimes, that doesn’t work so well. That’s why we want to do this early! Let’s photograph your little one before he realises that the fetal position is old news!

Second tip- do whatever you can to make sure he’s ready for a good deep sleep, and his belly is full. That way he’ll be sleeping so contentedly, he won’t even realise he’s being moved into various adorable positions.

For the most part, babies photograph best naked or with just a diaper. They’re so little, they just get lost in even the smallest clothes! Also, notice the patterns on your diapers. Are they tacky? Some are! I mean, if you want Pooh Bear in the photo, that’s fine, but for the most part, look for plain diapers, or consider a diaper cover.

I would love to use you, the parent, as a prop, so be ready to be in the picture. Your baby looks so much smaller when he’s snuggled up on your shoulder, or nestled in you arms. Have a shower, do your hair, and dress pretty- I’ll be using you, too!

Take a walk around your house and see if you have anything that would work as props for your session. Collect your baskets, bowls, blankets, and anything else that has potential. I’ll bring some along, but making use of what you have makes your images more personal.

And lastly- RELAX! I know that babies aren't angels, so if your babe needs to be fed/changed/snuggled or whatever, go to it! Newborn sessions move extremely slowly, and in reality, it feels more like a visit then a photo session. I'd recommend scheduling it when any older siblings may be napping, since hyper toddlers make it chaotic. We can include older sibs in the photos when they wake up and are fresh and ready to co-operate!

I can hardly wait to meet your new little bundle- and here's to a fantastic session!

We started off celebrating this little lady's first birthday with a cake!

Where I've come from...

In December of 2008 I did my very first newborn session.
I spend a lot of time thinking and debating about what I wanted to do with my photography... do I love it? Would people actually hire me? Could I really start a business?

As 2009 started, I set a few goals for myself (more commonly known as 'resolutions'!):
#1- to shoot my first wedding in 2009
#2- to start my business
#3- to take workshops and improve my work.

Well folks, it's been a good year! Five fantastic weddings 60+ regular sessions, plenty of newborns and families and new friends. A year ago I would not have believed this was possible- I surpassed 400 facebook fans this month! Where did you all come from?

All I can say is that I am humbled, and astounded, and exceedingly grateful for your support this past year. It has been an unbelievable first year in business!

Where I'm going...

Naturally, after working so hard this year, I'd like to be a successful and profitable business.

Did you catch that?

Profitable.

Because I shouldn't work for free. And essentially, this year has been just that.

A whole lot of work, earning far less then minimum wage.

In fact, if I actually look at the numbers, I didn't earn a single penny this year. Not one dollar actually made it into my household.

But, you say, I paid you!

Yes, you did. But I didn't ask much. And every penny that I took in through photography (besides 10% that went into our adoption fund), went back into my business.

You see, running a successful photography business isn't just buying a decent camera and running with it. There is so many more expenses that I didn't expect!

Expenses this year included an upgraded (used) camera body and lens, several software programs for sorting and editing and computer monitor calibration, expensive (but invaluable!) workshops, lens rentals, logo design, business cards, DVD mailers, stamps blah blah blah.
The list seems endless.

Unfortunately, of all those expenses, I forgot to include the most important one: my time.

I worked 20+ hours a week on this business, for what? 2009 was the year of no free time- I heard it was a pretty good year, but I was chained to my computer!

So I guess what I should say is, tonni.g.photographer isn't my business, it's the hobby that took over my life!

That ends with the closing of 2009.

The way I figure it, I deserve to make at least minimum wage for the time I put into this business. That means my prices are going up. In fact, portrait rates are doubling in 2010, and I'm working on figuring out my new wedding pricing. For those of you who are already booked for 2010, you're lucky, because that means you're getting a great deal :)

I'm truly sorry if you can no longer afford my services. But my dream is to be able to afford to give my clients the very best customer service I can give them, and the very highest quality images I can create. Custom photography is better then what you'll get at a Big Box Store, because it's CUSTOM. It takes my undivided attention, for more then just 20 minutes. This is the only way to make this business sustainable, and I intend to still be doing this in five years.

It was cold and windy, but this lovely family toughed it out. It took some convincing for Miss Saige to join that party (she kept her face buried in mom's shoulder for the first half hour!), but when she saw her puppy jumping all over me as I tried to take the picture, out came her beautiful smile! (It was definitely worth the puppy-slobber!)

This session was rescheduled from a rainout a few weeks ago- and guess what? The night before our scheduled session, these two got ENGAGED! How fantastic is that?

I have never been a part of a speedier photo session. Seriously. 30 minutes, and we were done! I'm absolutely certain it was mostly because these kids were so completely well behaved. Smiles (some fake, but hey! It's still a smile!), and lots of cheese, and following directions... they made my job a piece of cake!

I suppose that means kudos to the parents for raising such fantastic kids!

This was a special session- it was a gift session! Several of mom's friends got together and requested a gift card for a newborn session. What a great idea! I had such a good time meeting and hanging out with these four!

Little Capri was not feeling the photosession yesterday- but guess what Mom? We got some great ones! Born at a tiny 6lbs 4oz (and that was probably half hair!) she's filling up a pretty big piece of mom & dad's heart- and big brother's as well!

Kobi is a fantastic older brother, happily occupied with a truck, jumping in every once in a while for a photo.

My baby sister is getting married! And after much talking about doing an e-session, and meaning to do an e-session, and hoping to get around to doing an e-session... we finally did it!

Thomas has been telling me about this bridge all summer. It would be a great spot for pictures. It's an old train bridge in the middle of nowhere... and it's beautiful! And huge! And muddy. If only it wasn't muddy, I'd be taking brides and grooms here in a heart beat!

And we ended off the session at the beach at sunset. It was lovely!

(And wouldn't you know it, on that very beach, at the very time we were there, another couple was getting engaged at that very moment... and I get to shoot their wedding on December 5!)

This morning I watched TLC's A Baby Story (I know, I know, cheesy!), and fell in love with the adorable little girl with a full head of hair. I dreamed about having my own baby with lots of hair- such furry little heads are so cute!

A few hours later, I walked into this newborn sessio with cute little Chase- and guess what? HE HAS A FURRY LITTLE HEAD! Hooray!

He was a champ, considering that he's already 12 days old- content when awake, and floppy when asleep. Just how I like them!

I loved his curvy little lips, so I just had to get that detail.

Is there something I can do to make my wedding photos better?

What can I do to ensure that I get the very best photographs of my wedding?

Photography is all about light, and taking that into consideration will help tremendously towards getting the very best photographs. Location and time of day can make all the difference!

When laying out the schedule of your wedding day, consider scheduling the photographs as late in the day as you can- every hour further away from high noon will give us more options. If possible, consider sneaking out of the reception for a few minutes a half hour before sunset- the resulting photos may be the best shots all day!

When choosing a location for the formal photos, look for a place with abundant shade. Taking photos in the sun can cause harsh shadows and raccoon eyes- not very many mothers-of-the-bride appreciate that!

Also, look for locations that have a variety of settings for photos, for example, a park with bridges, buildings, trails and other features will give us lots of options! Feel free to have more then one location for photos, as long as you remember to plan for the travel time between sites.

Schedule ample time for your photographs- the more time I have, the more creative I can be. In general, I recommend 3 hours to complete family, bridal party, and bridal couple photographs.

But you’re the photographer- shouldn’t you be able to take pictures anywhere, and make them be awesome?

Well, yes- and no. I will be prepared for anything, and will max out my knowledge of photography to bring you the very best images I can on your wedding day. That’s my job!

However, if I’m not straining my brain with the technical side of “How on earth do I make this work?”, my brain is freed up to be more creative! Would you rather pay me to think really hard to make less-then-ideal light work? Or would you rather have me able to come up with fun photo ideas?

It’s up to you! I would rather work together to make it easy to get the most gorgeous photos of you on your wedding day!

Why edit? Part 1

Sometimes people look at me funny when I tell them about editing. Why edit? I mean, shouldn't a photographer just *know* how to make every shot awesome, no help required?
Um... no. There are precious few photographers who can measure up to that expectation!

For example: The beach is a pretty harsh environment for photo-taking. Direct sunlight, no shade... definitely a challenge. Shooting against the sun gives even light on their lovely faces, but the thing is... it's a shadow. Against harsh backlight.

But have no fear!

A quick little adjustment, and now you can see their faces!

One more click with Photoshop Actions, and the gray film is gone-

After all, you wouldn't want your Gr. 12 prom photos to be silhouettes!

I would recommend booking the shoot as soon after birth as possible. Babies tend to lose their fetal position curl around 3 weeks, not mention that they pack on pounds in the weeks after birth. If you can book it before he/she's three weeks old, that's great. Before ten days old is even better.
But, if your baby is older then that, I'll still do a shoot :)

How much?
I charge $40, which gets you the shoot + a cd of images either dropped off or mailed to you.

Plus $10 for travel over 1/2 hour

What do I need to know before the shoot?
1. Turn up the heat. If your little one is gonna be happily sleeping in his/her nothin's for any length of time, it's going to need to be pretty warm. If we adults sweat, that means the baby should be ok. If you were gonna be hanging out in your nothin's for an hour or two, what temperature would you prefer?

2. It'll take around 2 hours or so to get a good number of shots, with all the requisite snuggling and cuddling and settling in between. I will need that two hours to be full daylight, even if we are inside your house. Daylight coming in the windows will make your shoot rock.

3. Have special props ready. A blanket made by Gramma, a teddy from an uncle, a wooden initial, a special outfit... all will lend a special remembrance to your photo when you look at it in 20 years.

4. Have ideas. I will come ready with ideas and poses and such, but I am totally open to trying that pose you saw on so-n-so's facebook, and tweaking it to make it yours.

This little girl is blessed with some of the best parents around. They were so excited to meet her! Only 6lbs 1oz at birth, when I met her 2 weeks later she was still so so little. What a joy!
